Weird Beard have thrown me with this one a little. A Coffee Sour? It seems like a contradiction in terms, really. Coffee can be bitter, sure, but outright sour? It doesn’t seem to fit. But Weird Beard isn’t just a cool name and they like to try things that are a little bit different. But… does it work?
The short answer is… yes. The slightly longer answer is… yes, sort of. The longest answer is yes it does, and it’s certainly not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. Well, coffee. It pours very nicely, it’s a light, hazy, golden amber, albeit with a thin head, and certainly looks lovely in the glass. As far as the aroma goes, there’s not much to it… you get the bitterness of coffee and hints of malt initially but after that you don’t get much at all, which is disappointing.
The flavour is where it picks up, but it’s also likely be where the beer will divide, as you do get the coffee initially which then transforms into quite light, subtle notes of citrus and peel. It’s a weird transition but, for me, not unpleasant and the tart, freshness of the beer makes it quite enjoyable. But I will hold my hands up and say that I know it’s not going to be to everyone’s tastes and if there was a selection of beer in front of me it’s unlikely this will be my first pick. But do I like it? I do, and I commend Weird Beard for trying something different and I think with a bit of refinement the beer could get even better.
A decent beer that has it’s moments, but it’s not going to be to everyone’s liking.
