Yeastie Boys! I love this brewery. If I were to award a beer a score just a based on the brewery name alone, then this beer would be getting a 5 straight off the bat. I can’t do that, but it’s okay! As this is a great beer that stands on it’s own merits.
I’ve tried Earl Grey IPAs before, and it’s something you think wouldn’t work, but it does and it works very, very well and the Gunnamatta is probably the best Earl Grey IPA I’ve had thus far, but I have yet to try a beer I haven’t liked from the New Zealand based brewery yet, so that’s not really a surprise.
The appearance of the beer is very light and cloudy and verging almost on a peach colour which is very easy on the eye, and when you take a hit of the aroma you get that earl grey, followed by a fruity, floral sweetness, and these are the flavours which follow through on the taste, including a surprising dry, salty, bitterness which really adds to the complexity of the beer. But, despite these very strong flavours and the bitterness, it’s an extremely easy drinking beer, especially given that it has a strength of 6.5% ABV! It would be very easy to rattle through a few of these in short order.
If you’re a fan of Earl Grey or IPAs, then Gunnamatta is a must-buy, and even if you’re not necessarily a fan of tea or Earl Grey, then it’s worth a try anyway just because it’s such a nice beer. This one would be perfect for sitting outside in a sunny beer garden on a Sunday afternoon.
A wonderful beer on it’s own, and definitely one of the best Earl Grey IPAs around.
