I’ll admit it now – I bought this one because of the name. Howling Hops’ Double Chocolate Coffee Toffee Vanilla Milk Porter. It’s a mouthful for sure, and not one you could say five times fast with any sort of ease! Even less so after a few of these.

I will be honest and say that with so many flavours boasted on the label, I wasn’t sure if the Double Chocolate Coffee Toffee Vanilla Milk Porter (henceforth known as the DoubleChocCoffToffVanMilk for brevity) would deliver on them all.

But… it does! Just.

From the initial pour, the DoubleChocCoffToffVanMilk has the typical appearence that you would expect from a porter – a very dark beer which looks like it could be purely black coffee, which also follows through in the aroma with big hits of coffee with a few gentle notes of toffee and dark chocolate.

Despite the Double Chocolate being the main billing in the name of the beer, Coffee is also the predominant flavour that you’ll get when you take your first sip, and with a flavour as strong as coffee that’s only to be expected. But once you get over that initial hit, you do get a complex after taste of dark chocolate which is then finished by hints of vanilla and toffee. Plus despite being a porter, the beer is quite light, smooth and successfully manages to combine bitterness from the coffee and chocolate with sweetness from toffee and vanilla. It’s an impressive feat.

The DoubleChocCoffeeToffVanMilk is a beer that, personally, you could only have one of in a sitting though. The complexity of flavours and the strength would make it tough to have more than that. But if you’re a fan of porters – or even if you’re not – then I’d definitely suggest giving this a try at least once.

Summary

Coffee dominates the line-up of flavours in this Porter, but they all manage to make an appearance in this endearingly complex beer.
