I’ve reviewed an AND Union beer before, their lovely Unfiltered Lager, which was my first experience of their beers but I became an instant fan after trying it. I was lucky enough to go to this year’s Imbibe Live and they had a stall up there which I enthusiastically dragged my friends to. I sampled each of the beers they had to offer – which was considerable – and took away a bottle of their Summer Wheat ale to review.
If trying to capture summer in bottle was AND’s goal, then they certainly succeeded. The appearance is bright, golden and looks like honey in a glass and the aroma reflects with that – it’s sweet and full of fruits, like banana, peach and pineapple and you could spend an age just taking in the aroma.
But beer is for drinking, and fortunately AND’s Summer delivers there too, with the taste of banana being especially prominent. I’ve drunk beers that specifically advertise themselves as banana and they’ve just tasted artificial. But this one tastes more natural, and once you get through the sweet, tropical fruitness you get a hoppy aftertaste to compliment it. Throw in the light, refreshing, easy drinking feel of the beer, you’ve got yourself a terrific ale which is perfect not just for summer, but any day.
AND describe this as “Summer in a Glass” and they’re not wrong. Crisp, fruity and very drinkable.
