I find that fruity beers can be a bit hit and miss – they’re either very nice or very disappointing. But this Banana Beer from Mongozo kind of straddles that line and it’s difficult for me to decide with side of the line that it falls.

I’ve had Banana Beers before – specifically Wells’ Banana Bread Ale which is very nice indeed and has quite a subtle banana flavour to it. But the Mongozo Banana Beer doesn’t do subtle. It takes the banana flavour and slaps you around the face with it – however my issue is that it’s not a natural banana flavour. It’s an artificial banana flavour which tastes exactly like the foamy banana sweets that you can get in your Pick ‘n’ Mix (RIP Woolworths), which by itself is not a flavour I dislike but it’s an odd taste to get in your beer.

The main issue with the Mongozo Banana Beer is that it’s very sweet, and the flavour of the banana is so clearly artificial and it states on the bottle that it has sweeteners and flavourings in it. I only had half a bottle of it and even that felt like too much and it left that “furry” feeling on my teeth from where you have too much sugary food and I can’t say I enjoyed that particularly.

With all of that being said, I can see why people would like this beer. If you enjoy sweet cocktails like a pina colada then I can imagine this would go down well. Also, I would very much like to try the beer again when it is absolutely ice cold with a spicy meal, specifically something like a carribean curry, or some jerk chicken because I think it would work very well.

All in all, I’d give this another try if only because I see the potential for it to work very well with the right food and it’d be very refreshing on a hot day when had ice cold. But would I pick it as a go-to beer that I could drink at any time? Sadly, no.

A divisive beer. It’s a bit too sweet to have by itself, but pair it with right food and have it ice cold and you’d have an enjoyable drink.
